There’s a lot of work to be done in Mississippi. Luckily, there are some very hard-working progressives there already. Every Mississippi progressive does the work of ten, and makes a big difference.
We put together this directory of progressive Mississippi resources to help bring greater notice to the liberal side of the state. Truth be told, we’re hoping that we’ve missed a large number of progressive organizations in our search of Mississippi. Heck, in the whole of Mississippi, we couldn’t find one single anti-war organization. We want to help whoever’s on the ground in Mississippi, so, if you know of any progressive groups, information resources, or candidates in Mississippi that we don’t already have listed here, leave a comment and we will happily consider adding links to them as a part of this growing catalog of Mississippi progress.

The Irregular State of Mississippi
There’s no way to get around this basic fact: Mississippi is one of the most hostile states for progressives to live and work in. That doesn’t mean that there are no progressives in Mississippi. On the contrary: We know there are. We have met with them ourselves. However, progressives in Mississippi are largely forced to live underground, and to shield their political beliefs from their neighbors’ eyes.
Evidence of the extremist right wing dominance of Mississippi is the fact that people from Mississippi will tell you that the town of Oxford is some kind of liberal haven. Of course, from the perspective of anyone outside Mississippi, Oxford is anything but liberal, with a harsh conservative social structure, sometimes violent racial tensions, and a Confederate-loving good old boy culture. Still, in the dominant Mississippi mindset, the fact that Oxford has a concentration of college educated adults makes the place seem dangerously liberal.
