Utah, in name the land of the Utes, is more commonly known as the home of extremely conservative religious settlers who wandered in from Palmyra. There's more to Utah than just the Mormons, though. There are plenty of people in Utah who do not dream of finding the One Mighty and Strong. Heck, plenty of Mormons are progressive, even if they keep it quiet. We witness the hard work of Mormons for Equality and Social Justice.
Utah's cultural heritage runs deep and dry. I remember scrambling through Cottonwood Canyon to reach the ruins of an ancient settlement. Upon arrival, it seemed that the inhabitants might have left just the year before. We who live in more humid climates are too used to watching the past disappear before we can honor it. In Utah, history does not rot.
Utah progressives have got a lot on their plate. Their state has a natural beauty that is challenged in few other places in America, and that nature needs special protection. The enforcement of the separation of Church and State is a constant struggle. The economy of Utah also provides special challenges to working families.
Progressive Utah is a quiet place, and tracking down the state's more liberal organizations is a special challenge. New groups might exist for some years before calling much attention to themselves. So, if you know of any progressive candidates, information resources or organizations in Utah that we don't have listed here, let us know so that we can consider including them in our growing index. Also be sure to visit our collection of Utah progressive bumper stickers and buttons to help spread the word of freedom enlightenment across the state.
