That's how it is with Indiana, which cannot really be understood as a single state, but rather as a collection of regions within the borders of a single state. Huge waves of bigotry skirt around tall islands of progressive idealism. Love of nature is the neighbor to indifference to the environment.

Whatever's happening in your particular neck of the Indiana woods, you can feel confident that you don't need to go far to find something else. Politics in Indiana are kind of like the time zone there - it changes from town to town.
