US Attorney General Lies Under Oath

Jeff Sessions Vladimir Putin Donald Trump

Just days ago, Jeff Sessions took the job of US Attorney General, the top law enforcement official in the nation. This morning, it’s uncertain whether he will keep the job for even one month.

Donald Trump’s first National Security Advisor, Mike Flynn, was removed from office a couple weeks ago in strikingly similar circumstances. Flynn had met secretly with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak immediately after Barack Obama announced sanctions against Russia as punishment for dictator Vladimir Putin’s attacks against the American presidential election.

Now, it has been revealed that Jeff Sessions himself met with Sergey Kislyak twice, in secret. This was during the time when Jeff Sessions was working as part of the Trump for President campaign. Then, during his confirmation hearings, when Sessions was asked if he had met with any Russian officials during the 2016 campaign, Sessions lied. “No,” he said. Jeff Sessions twice told the United States Senate, under legal oath, that he had not met with Russian officials in 2016.

Now, America has an Attorney General, the head of the Department of Justice, who is known to have lied under oath. Members of the U.S. Senate and members of the American public are wondering how they can believe anything that Sessions says.

Members of Congress are calling for Jeff Sessions to resign.

Congressman Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has issued a statement reading, “It is inconceivable that even after Michael Flynn was fired for concealing his conversations with the Russians that Attorney General Sessions would keep his own conversations secret for several more weeks. When Senator Sessions testified under oath that ‘I did not have communications with the Russians,’ his statement was demonstrably false, yet he let it stand for weeks – and he continued to let it stand even as he watched the President tell the entire nation he didn’t know anything about anyone advising his campaign talking to the Russians. Attorney General Sessions should resign immediately, and there is no longer any question that we need a truly independent commission to investigate this issue.”

Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, made the following statement: ““Jeff Sessions lied under oath during his confirmation hearing before the Senate. Under penalty of perjury, he told the Senate Judiciary Committee, ‘I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I did not have communications with the Russians.’ We now know that statement is false. Attorney General Sessions has never had the credibility to oversee the FBI investigation of senior Trump officials’ ties to the Russians. That is why Democrats have consistently called for Sessions to recuse himself from any oversight of the investigation. Now, after lying under oath to Congress about his own communications with the Russians, the Attorney General must resign. Sessions is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country and must resign. There must be an independent, bipartisan, outside commission to investigate the Trump political, personal and financial connections to the Russians.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren writes, “This is not normal. This is not fake news. This is a very real & serious threat to the national security of the United States. We need a special prosecutor totally independent of the AG. We need a real, bipartisan, transparent Congressional investigation into Russia. And we need Attorney General Jeff Sessions – who should have never been confirmed in the first place – to resign. We need it now.”

Whether or not Sessions resigns, he may be prosecuted for perjury. It is uncertain how a person can credibly wield the power of the Attorney General of the United States even while he is himself under criminal investigation for illegally deceiving a branch of the federal government.
