Friday saw the confirmation of Scott Pruitt as Donald Trump’s Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt’s selection is regarded as the most absurd in the history of the EPA, because as Attorney General of Oklahoma, Pruitt has served the interests of big oil and gas corporations, attacking the EPA in court, trying to undo the agency’s work.
Scott Pruitt’s agenda at the EPA is to destroy it.
It is to be expected that Republicans in the U.S. Senate would vote to confirm Scott Pruitt’s nomination. After all, their campaigns are funded by the same fossil fuel companies that have directed Pruitt’s work.
What’s disappointing is that two Senate Democrats, Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Manchin, joined with Donald Trump and Senate Republicans to vote in favor of Pruitt’s confirmation.
Why would Heitkamp and Manchin join with Donald Trump’s attacks against America’s clear air and clean water? As with their Republican colleagues, Heitkamp and Manchin’s political careers have been bankrolled by corporations that sell dirty fossil fuels. They’re inhabitants of the same swamp of corruption that Donald Trump and his enablers are expanding in Washington D.C.
