Last week, Donald Trump threatened to create yet another oppressive executive order banning travel, in defiance of courts that have concluded that his present travel ban targeting Muslims is unconstitutional and therefore not in effect.
Screaming in all caps, Trump warned that “THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!”
Is it true? Is the security of the United States of America in danger? Will we all be in peril if there is no Muslim ban in place?
Without any travel ban in place, the United States has been perfectly safe from terrorism.
When I use that phrase, “perfectly safe from terrorism”, it isn’t hyperbole.
Last week, I introduced the American Terrorist Attack Risk Index, which calculates the reasonable chance of a person in the USA being killed by terrorists by the end of this year.
Right now, the risk of terrorist attack is so low in the United States that it’s practically zero. Yes, there always could be a terrorist attack, just as a meteor could fall from the sky and hit a major city. The chances for either to happen, however, are extraordinarily slim.
We are over 1/10th of the way through the year now, and there has not been a single terrorist attack in the United States yet.
With such a low prevalence of terrorism, there is no rational reason for the President of the United States to be pushing so hard to impose extreme measures in the name of fighting terrorism.
Donald Trump wants Americans to believe that they are in danger, but there is no danger. The security of our nation is just fine.
The freedom of our nation, however, is at stake.
Benjamin Franklin is often quoted as saying that those who would sacrifice liberty in order to gain a little security deserve neither.
In the time of Trump, we need to speak more plainly. Those who would sacrifice liberty in a time when security is already strong are blithering idiots.
