“Global Temperatures Plunge. Icy Silence from Climate Alarmists. Global land temperatures have plummeted by one degree Celsius since the middle of this year – the biggest and steepest fall on record.”
So writes the Trump White House propaganda arm known as “Breitbart,” in an article dated November 30, 2016 (we make it a matter of policy not to link to Breitbart in order to avoid raising the Trump propaganda arm’s search engine ratings; you are welcome to use a search engine to locate the article should you choose to read it).
Is this true? Have global land temperatures actually plummeted by one degree Celsius since the middle of this year?
Let’s unpack that statement.
- The Breitbart propaganda article does not link to any dataset, only to a Daily Mail article that itself also does not link to any dataset.
- The Daily Mail refers not to actual land temperatures, but to “Nasa satellite measurements of the lower atmosphere.”
- Actual NASA satellite measurements of the lower atmosphere, which are not the same thing as land temperatures, and which in turn are not the same thing as global temperatures over land and sea, can be found here. The data center is run by Dr. Roy Spencer, a rare climate denier in science, and Dr. Danny Braswell of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, which houses a climate denial center. UAH’s own climate denial web page declares the following using NASA satellite measurements of the lower atmosphere in an update posted yesterday: “To see how we are now progressing toward a record warm year in the satellite data, the following chart shows the average rate of cooling for the rest of 2016 that would be required to tie 1998 as warmest year in the 38-year satellite record:
Based upon this chart, it now seems virtually impossible for 2016 to not be a record warm year in the UAH dataset.” Even the climate denial center that works with NASA’s satellite-based temperature of the lower atmosphere acknowledges that what’s being seen is global warming — a record-hot 2016 — not global cooling. The Daily Mail article — and the Breitbart arm of the Trump propaganda machine — are looking at a very small slice of the data over time, and inaccurately at that. There is no 1 degree Celsius drop in the graph shown above for even a small slice of time, period.
- As has been noted, even this atmospheric data shows global warming, not global cooling. And this is of the atmosphere, not of the actual surface of the globe where people are. What’s the trend in actual measurements of temperature over land and sea? NASA takes these measurements every month, and the trend is staggering.
Over land only, using the most recent completed measurement for October 2016, compared to readings going back to 1880:
Over both land and sea, using the most recent completed measurement for October 2016, compared to readings going back to 1880:
Yet again, what’s visible here is global warming, not global cooling. The Breitbart propaganda arm of the Trump White House wants you desperately to believe otherwise.
